Alexandra Mann Visions of Christianity Class

Alexandra Mann

In another Religion class, we have discussed the idea of asceticism. Asceticism is when people discipline their bodies from what is essential to them. This is mostly seen in a religious context. An example of this is a priest refraining for sexual acts. This is because a priest is married to the church instead of another individual. This is why they remain celibate for their life. Also, Asceticism can mean refraining from indulging yourself in your desires. Apollonius was an ancient, Greek philosopher. It has been said that he only drank water, ate fruits and ate vegetables for five years as he sat in silence. This brings me to my question. Why do religions fast? For example, in Islam, they take fasting very seriously during the month of Ramadan. You must partake in this event. Christians on the other hand, are encouraged to fast, but it is not a sin if they do not partake in it. In Christianity, the goal of fasting or obtaining from pleasures is to remove distractions and rely on God to be the daily bread. It strengthens the relationship between one and God and allows people to hear from him more clearly. During this process, it might not be easy. At times it will be really challenging, but during these challenging times reliance on God is important. He will fulfill the needs that his people have.
