Outside Reading #3 - The Heavenly Man
In The Heavenly Man correlates well to what we learn about in class about ecology and religion. Brother Yun is a man of God who goes through some radical circumstances because he makes his faith in God a priority over the faith he has in himself. Brother Yun says, "You can never really know the Scriptures until you're willing to be changed by them" (Yun, p. 297) which reflects what we discuss in class. Wirzba always says how nature is a way in which we can view and learn about the character of God and I think Yun would agree that you cannot know God unless you are willing to learn about his creation and in this case, nature. When you get to know a natural ecology, you can find so much life pointing to a Creator that loves. People don't realize that nature is so important to society yet we are so willing to crush it under the hands of humans who desperately need oil and more buildings. Our world needs to stop the demolition of forests and other ecologies so that we are able to live in this beautifully created world. Without the environments in which we gain resources from, there will be nothing left to gain! It is important that we take care of our Earth because in order to care for the people in it, we need to cultivate nature around us for a good purpose.
