Over spring break, I had the time to reflect while being in
nature. My family and I went on a trip and the house that we rented was very secluded. I did not have much cell phone service during my stay there. Before I
left for this trip, I thought I was going to need my cell phone. How could I go a week without contact with my
friends’ back home? How could I go a week without social media? How could I go
a week without my Spotify Playlists? I thought I could not do it. After
spending seven days this way, I realized that it was the best thing that I
could have done. Being in nature for seven days allowed me to detox, clear my
mind and connect to myself and God in a way that I feel like I really had not
done in a long time. I would love being “unplugged.” It was a simpler life. It
allowed me to reflect on why we rely so heavily on social media in our society.
What if in 100 years from now, we all relied on social media as a form of
affirmation. This could come through likes or comments. If we continue relying
on social media as we do now, our society will become less personal and less
“real,” in my opinion.
