Class Reading: From Nature to Creation
“Iconic perception teaches that love is the crucial and most
authentic movement of seeing. Why? Because love, when it is true, resists and
refuses the idolatrous impulse. Love does not pretend to comprehend, nor does
it mean to take the other as a possession or object of control.” Wirzba, 71.
In this passage, Wirzba connects iconic perception to love.
He states that when you truly perceive something you do not see it as a
possession but rather as something tangible and independent. You understand
that you cannot control that individual but you still want what is best for
them. Iconic perception understands that someone has a seed of the divine
implanted in them and because of that they deserve respect. Wirzba continues to
connect this Paul’s writing in 1 Corinthians 13 where it talks about love. Here
he writes that “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things,
endures all things. Love never ends.” Wirzba argues that similarly iconic
seeing has no end because it is founded in this divine ideal.
