The film Moana, true to form, is full of song. One of the songs in particular caught my attention because of its significance. The lyrics read, “consider the coconut/ consider its tree/ we use each part of the coconut/ that’s all we need”. It reminded me of the stories I would hear about how Native Americans were amazingly efficient and responsible with what they took from nature, such as animals hunted, etc. The same level of efficiency is described as the song continues with the different uses of the coconut tree “we make our nets from the fibers/ the water is sweet inside/ we use the leaves to build fires/ we cook up the meat inside/ the island gives us what we need. I am amazed by such a level of efficiency and responsibility with little to no waste. It provokes in me a desire to find ways to reduce the amount of waste I currently produce.
