Student Choice: Public Transportation
Transportation is something that is typically undervalued in
most social contexts. Generally, it is taken for granted that any given
individual can afford gas and a car and that there are roads to drive on. A car
could take you anywhere – to an art museum, to a grocery store, to a park, to a
job, to school. However, for a significant portion of people, transportation is
not guaranteed. Public transportation in most cities is ineffective, not taking
people where they need to go. Many of the authors we have studied have claimed
that nature has an essential role in society. They argue that by being in
nature, you have a greater revelation of who God is or you are more at peace.
If his is true, than we have a duty to ensure appropriate transportation to
these places. Quality of life is not just dependent on access to economic
capital but also to social and cultural capital.
