When doing research before heading to Utah for
spring break, I reflected on the many books I have read related to hiking. One book
was titled, “Almost Somewhere” by Suzanne Roberts, which depicts her twenty-
eight day hike on the John Muir Trail. The book is a comedic account of Roberts’
hike with her two friends, one of which was recovering from an eating disorder,
and the other who was a competitive outdoorswoman. It explains the trials,
struggles, and disagreements that are common on a long distance hike, especially
one involving women who are hiking in order to find themselves. I really liked
this book, since it did not sugar coat the positives or the negatives of being
on trail, and it truly made me feel nostalgic for the outdoors.
