Ecological theology

April 20, 2017
Student Choice: H. Paul Santmire

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

H. Paul Santmire is an ecological theologian who argues that the story of the world is a story of three actors – God, humanity, and nature. He is critical of the anthropocentric view of the world and the creation story that places man at the center of the story, solely focusing on the relationships between him and God. He also critical of those who claim the Bible has nothing to say about environmental issues. Instead, he claims that nature is a reflection of God’s character. God cares for nature and how he relates to it should speak to his character. Not only does nature reveal something about God’s character, it also should change how we treat nature. If nature is precious to God – creating it involved five days of creation – than we should treat it as precious.
