After our conversation about the cave and its meaning of belonging that extends beyond the human community, I started to reflect about my journey to Ecuador. This past December, I went to Quito, Ecuador with the Junior Bonner Service Scholars. The goal and purpose of the trip was to understand a different culture and gain an international perspective. I have never been to South America, and I could not help but to admire its scenery. One trip we took, was to a place called TelefériQo. It is a gondola lift that runs from the edge of the city up to the east side of Pichincha Volcano, which we got hike up. The journey is a memory I will never forget. It was about a 4698 meter hike to the summit of Cruz Loma. Due to the high altitude and the wind, it was challenging, but the view was unforgettable. Seeing the city from above, other mountains in the distance, and hiking with fellow friends made it an amazing experience.
