The
Pilgrim’s Progress is a creative story by John Bunyan telling of a Pilgrim
named Christian who finds out about the Gospel. Once he does this, he takes up
his back pack (representing guilt) and runs out of his town which a book told
him would be destroyed. No one in his town believes him, and he is forced to go
on to the journey alone. Along the way, he meets several people who either
advance he journey (like Evangelist) or hinder his journey (Like Mr. Legality).
Christian goes along the journey after falling into a trap of legalism. He is
then found by the Evangelist who shows him the path to the true gate which a
man named Goodwill runs. Christian finally makes it to the Place of Deliverance
(Calvary), and at that time, his pack falls from his back, symbolizing all of
his guilt being taken away by the cross of Christ. The book continues on much
longer to explain the Christian life in such vivid detail, and in order to
treat this as a book review, I will not spoil the rest for you. This book feels
as if it could be a universal description of every Christian’s encounter with
their own sin and subsequent salvation with Christ.
